SARS Frustrations

Many of our clients have been due refunds from SARS, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to get them to pay out.

Bank details verification is being requested (even if the bank details have not changed for years), which we unfortunately cannot complete on behalf of our clients. In these cases the taxpayer needs to appear in person with the necessary documents at a SARS branch office.

Should you be due a refund on assessment, the chances are very high that you will be reviewed or audited.

Even though SARS always operates within the law, they have been known to request the most inconvenient documents to prove certain expenses or deductions. An example is that they request twelve months bank statements to prove medical aid or retirement annuity contributions. We believe the fund certificate should be sufficient.

We have also experienced SARS requesting every single entertainment expense slip and receipt. While this is frustrating and redundant, SARS have every right to do so.

All of this is only a delay tactic on SARS part, but it is extremely important that every single supporting document is kept as proof.

We kindly request your patience and understanding during this process. We are doing everything in our power to assist you.

Please contact the Tax Department if you would like further advice with regards SARS refunds.
